As the Buck SURGESs Euro dies a slow DEATH
A US recovery and the possibility of Fed tapering QE is giving investors plenty of reason to buy the dollar, while there are increasingly fewer reasons to purchase the euro. Political turmoil in Portugal this week reminds investors that disarray in Europe can still send shockwaves throughout markets, ECB President Mario Draghi is expected to take a dovish tone at Thursday's press conference and the market appears ready to buy the dollar and sell other G10 currencies even on an average US unemployment release Friday. This is not a good combination for the euro, which is down some 0.7%, hitting a session low of $1.2963 recently. ([email protected])

    EUR Briefing - New York

[NEW YORK July 2, 2103 20:11 GMT] An o/n break of the 200 & 100 DMAs was thwarted on Europe’s open as Asian names sold 1.3075/80 & had more to go into 1.3100 along with s-t specs. The drop from 1.3078 was aided by sovs & EUR/USD sat 1.3030 at NY’s open. Macro & RM accts were noted sellers at NY’s open to bring the pair to 1.2990. Asian t/p bids near 1.2980/85 halted the slide to keep touted stops below safe for the time being. A bounce near 1.3040 met renewed selling as Portugal’s Foreign Minister Portas quit. With two resignations from that govt within as many days mkt apprehension grew. Macros again sold the pair as did s-t specs. The noted Asian bids were cleared & stops through 1.2980 & CTA stops at 1.2970 were run. A session low of 1.2964 was hit before the pair bounced to 1.2975 into the close. With the daily cloud top now cleared bears grow more confident. Their next hurdle is 1.2935/55 where the late-May lows, 76.4% Fib of 1.2796-1.3417 and cloud base sit. The ECB is likely to be dovish on Thursday and could be the catalyst to break the next supt. Through 1.2935 likely sees May’s low retested. (CR) Copyright (c) 2013 Thomson Reuters - IFRMarkets

EU Steady in New Zealand but potential for DOWNSIDE

EUR/USD is steady in early New Zealand trading, but expect the pair to see some pressure during the session, says HiFX senior trader Dan Bell. "The sentiment in the euro has certainly turned negative and the break under the 1.300 level suggests we've got more downside potential for the euro-U.S. dollar." He says the USD remains supported as the data flow out of the US continues to be "more robust" than that in Europe. The pair is at 1.2981. He puts short-term support at 1.2950 with resistance at 1.3000. (

    Tapering just got much closer
News that Obama administration is postponing for one year the requirement that businesses cover their workers under Obamacare should, at the margin, mean more US employment (at least for the next 12 months), which should, therefore, move us closer toward Fed employment targets to begin tapering.

Don’t expect to see any boost in employment in this week’s employment figures, but in the coing weeks and months this should make a difference
