GBP/USD approaching to key 1.6600


GBP/USD extend it’s loses approaches to key 1.6600; if breached, next key support

level lies at 1.6550 zone, 20 SMA in the daily chart. Under that level, and following strong come back from 1.7045 that could signal a potential turn top, the pair could retest the ascendant trend line coming from March lows at 1.3653 in the mi term, this week around 1.6380. If price action takes the pair under mentioned trend line, longer term bias will turn bearish, with 1.6200, base of previous range, 1.6000 and 1.5700 as next support zones to consider.

Shorter term resistances lie at 1.6650/60 zone, followed by 1.6700. Confirmations above this level could trigger some upside correction as pair remains over sold after past Friday’s rally. Watch for 1.6742, previous yearly high, as probable target above the mentioned 1.6700. Supports come at the mentioned 1.6550 followed by 1.6520 and finally 1.6470.

The U.S. dollar lost a little ground versus major rivals Monday but preserved the bulk of gains made versus major rivals in the wake of Friday's bullishly-received U.S. July employment data.

Strategists at Brown Brothers Harriman said traders appeared "undecided" over the direction of the greenback, unable to determine if Friday's jump amid strong gains by equity markets marked a true turning point.

The dollar had previously tended to lose ground on favorable economic news and rallying equity markets, while rising on bouts of safe-haven buying on negative news and falling equities.

"On the hand, the pattern by which the dollar tends to weaken on better economic news appears well entrenched in sentiment and the commonly told narrative about less need for the dollar's safe-haven function," they wrote.

Brown Brothers Harriman expects the pattern to break, led by a move higher in U.S. rates over European bond yields.

Strategists at Standard Chartered Bank said the jump by the dollar on Friday came as the currency was becoming increasingly oversold relative to interest-rate spreads, oil and the S&P 500 stock index.

"Near term, we may well see a typical summer burst of U.S. dollar short covering," they wrote, followed by a resumption of the greenback's downtrend.

The euro traded at $1.4201 versus the dollar, up slightly from $1.4179 Friday.

The British pound remained on the defensive, slipping 0.3% to $1.6631 versus the dollar. Sterling has been under pressure since the Bank of England's decision Thursday to boost its quantitative-easing program by an unexpectedly large 50 billion pounds ($84 billion).

The dollar index (DXY), a measure of the greenback against a trade-weighted basket of six major currencies, slipped to 77.974, down from 78.94 on Friday.

The dollar slipped versus the Japanese currency to trade at 97.19 yen, down from 97.54 yen in North American trade late Friday. The greenback rallied more than 2% against its Japanese rival Friday after the Labor Department said the U.S. economy shed 247,000 jobs in July, the fewest since August.

Japanese government data released Friday showed core machinery orders jumped more than forecast, as did the nation's current-account surplus.

Core orders soared 9.7% in June from the previous month, a much bigger increase than the 2.9% rise expected on average by economists surveyed by Nikkei and Dow Jones Newswires. Separate data from the Ministry of Finance showed Japan's current-account surplus more than doubled on year in June, also beating expectations.

"The export-driven Japanese economy is not only benefiting from the pickup in global demand, but also from the stabilization of dollar/yen around the 95.00 level," said Boris Schlossberg, director of currency research at GFT.

"With most Japanese businesses hedged around that price point, currency valuations are finally proving supportive rather than disruptive for most Japanese businesses," he said in emailed comments.
