Technical Report:
Yesterdays activity was an ‘inside day’(trading within Thursday’s range) which technically points to a period of consolidation. There is good support 3 to 4 dollars below and the nearby upside target is Fridays high of $127.51. However all of the short term moving averages are yet to show signs of recovery and a breech of this mentioned support could easily send us down to the lows of early June around $121.30.
The short and medium term trends are down while the long term trends remain bullish.
Support: $124.05 (Yesterdays low) Resistance: $129.50 (high of 23/07/08)
Support: $123.39 (Friday’s low) Resistance: $127.51 (Friday’s high)
Support: $122.81 (100 day moving average) Resistance: $126.49 (Yesterdays high)
Summary:
The ‘inside day’ mentioned above indicates a struggle between the ‘bulls’ and the ‘bears’ amidst a day of conflicting news. Oil opened firmer on the news of a couple of attacks on Shell pipelines in Nigeria whereas the underlying shrinking demand issues are still weighing. These demand woes were exacerbated by the EIA suggesting that oil usage was down during May to the tune of 900,000 b/d as opposed to their previous indications of just 250,000. In addition these reducing demand fears were not helped by a drop off in the Dow future of over 200 points.
We seem to be stuck in a trade off between geopolitical and fundamental factors currently and probably the strongest argument for the ‘bears’ is that rebel attacks in Nigeria and news of more widespread nuclear installations throughout Iran have only pushed this market $3.00 above the lows.
