FXCM makes its money through the spread, which is the difference between the bid and the ask. The spread is 3-5 pips on most currency pairs. FXCM operates as a market maker, meaning FXCM acts as the counterpart for all client transactions and then offsets these trades in the interbank market. FXCM charges no commissions or fees to trade or maintain a FXCM trading account, and is compensated for its services through the spread.

The sheer size of the forex market (46 times greater than all futures markets combined) and its greater price stability allow forex traders to get a much higher degree of financial leverage than is typical with stocks or even with futures contracts. FXCM offers up to 200:1 leverage.
