Sept. 6 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks fell the most in more than a month after labor costs exceeded economists' forecasts, reigniting concern that the Federal Reserve may have to raise interest rates to restrain economic growth.

``Today's data puts fuel on the inflation fire,'' said David Rolfe, who helps manage $575 million at Wedgewood Partners Inc. in St. Louis. ``The market is grappling with how fast do we decelerate and what that means for corporate earnings.''

Home Depot Inc., the world's largest home-improvement merchant, led a decline among retailers on concern higher borrowing costs may curb consumer spending. Intel Corp. fell after the biggest semiconductor maker said it will eliminate 10,500 jobs.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 9.62, or 0.7 percent, to 1303.63 at 12:21 p.m. in New York, the biggest drop since July 21. The Dow average slipped 52.83, or 0.5 percent, to 11,416.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index retreated 29.04, or 1.3 percent, to 2176.66.

Stocks rallied in August and the first two trading sessions of this month on signs inflation is under control. Prices paid by consumers and manufacturers rose less than expected last month, while the economy continued to expand at a steady rate.

The reports supported the Fed's forecast of a gradual slowdown and bolstered speculation central bankers will hold rates steady at 5.25 percent at their Sept. 20 meeting.

Labor Costs Rise

Today's data suggested higher borrowing costs may be necessary and that increased wages may inhibit profit growth.

Labor costs advanced at a 4.9 percent pace, compared with a revised 9 percent increase in the first quarter. Economists had expected a gain of 4 percent.

``When you have labor costs rising, the profit picture has to deteriorate,'' said Kevin Ferry, chief market strategist at Cronus Futures Management in Chicago.

After surging 16.3 percent in the second quarter, S&P 500 profits will rise 14.3 percent in the third, 13.4 percent in the fourth and 11 percent in next year's first quarter, according to analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial. Second-quarter profit in 2007 is projected to rise 8.9 percent.

Productivity, a measure of how much an employee produces for each hour of work, gained at an annual rate of 1.6 percent, after a 4.3 percent gain the previous three months, the Labor Department said today. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News expected a 1.6 percent rate.

A separate report said service industry growth in August accelerated from its slowest pace this year as orders rose and expenses slowed.

ISM Report

The Institute for Supply Management's index of non- manufacturing businesses including banks, builders and retailers increased to 57.0 last month from 54.8 in July. A Bloomberg survey forecast the index to edge up to 55.1. Readings above 50 point to growth.

More data will come later today when the Fed issues its report on regional economic activity, known as the beige book, at 2 p.m. New York time. Policy makers use the data to inform their views on the state of the economy.

Home Depot fell 54 cents to $34.23. A gauge of retailers slid 1.1 percent for the third-biggest drop among two dozen industry groups in the index.

Semiconductor shares lost 2.1 percent for the top decline.

Intel Falls

Intel dropped 56 cents to $19.43. The company announced yesterday a plan to cut 10,500 jobs, fewer than predicted, and said it will reach $3 billion in annual cost savings by 2008, more than some analysts estimated.

Shares of energy producers fell as crude slid to a three- month low. Oil for October delivery fell 0.4 percent to $68.30 a barrel in New York after earlier touching $67.77.

Exxon Mobil Corp., the largest oil company, declined 59 cents to $67.89. Schlumberger Ltd., the world's largest oilfield-services company, lost 95 cents to $61.35.

Refiners Sunoco Inc. and Valero Energy Corp. retreated after Citigroup Investment Research downgraded the shares to ``hold'' from ``buy.''

Sunoco fell $2.42 to $68.79 and Valero slid $1.30 to $54.46. Analyst Doug Leggate said profit margins are weakening for the companies and second half earnings may fall short of estimates.

Hewlett-Packard Co. tumbled 50 cents to $35.96. The world's second-largest personal-computer maker is being probed by the California attorney general after company investigators disguised their identity while trying to determine which directors leaked confidential information to the media. Board member George Keyworth has admitted he was the source.

XM Satellite

XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., the largest pay-radio company, lost 44 cents to $12.35. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the company's subscriber targets and its costs to attract customers.

Finisar Corp. dropped 45 cents to $3.25. The maker of equipment for computer networks reported revenue of $106.2 million in the fiscal first quarter. Analysts in a Thomson survey expected $107.5 million, the average of six estimates.

Ford Motor Co. increased 13 cents to $8.52 after Chief Executive Officer William Clay Ford Jr. stepped down and hired Boeing Co. executive Alan Mulally to succeed him. Citigroup raised its recommendation on Ford's shares to ``hold'' from ``sell.'' Boeing shares fell 88 cents to $74.49.

General Motors Corp. rose 86 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $31.30 for the biggest gain in the Dow average. The world's largest automaker will offer longer warranties on vehicles to boost confidence in GM products, two people familiar with the plan said.
