NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks declined Thursday, extending losses into a third session, after jobless claims fell to 359,000 last week, with the level a bit higher than expected.

“We’re due for a moderate pullback,” Glenn Guard, director of investment management at Campbell Wealth Management in Alexandria, Va., said of Wall Street’s advance, which has the S&P 500 SPX -0.72% set to finish the first quarter with a double-digit advance.

“With the stock market where it is, any news that is not fantastic is going to be met with some disappointment,” Guard said of weekly claims data.

The claims report was “mildly disappointing, but when you look at the trend line overall, it’s a very good one, and I do believe that trend will continue,” Guard said.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.37% fell 84.53 points, or 0.6%, to 13,041.6, with American Express Co. AXP -2.69% among its worst performers, down 2.8%, after Wells Fargo & Co. downgraded the credit-card issuer to market perform from outperform.

The Dow is currently off 0.3% for the week.

Down 0.4% from last Friday’s close, the S&P 500 Index declined 13.27 points, or 1%, to 1,392.23, with financial companies leading sector declines that included all of the index’s 10 major industry groups.

Shares of Best Buy Co. BBY -7.85% fell 9.4% after the consumer-electronics retailer’s 2012 revenue outlook fell short of expectations.

Red Hat Inc. RHT +17.42% shares rose 14% after the distributor of the Linux operating system reported fourth-quarter results that exceeded Wall Street’s estimates and said it would repurchase $300 million of its shares.

“The best days of earnings surprises are behind us, but I still believe there are still going to be some bright spots out there,” said Guard at Campbell Wealth Management.

The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.84% lost 31.41 points, or 1%, to 3,073.55, with the losses denting a weekly rise that currently stands at 0.2%.

For every stock rising more than four fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 269 million shares traded as of 11:50 a.m. Eastern.

Oil prices fell, with the crude-futures contract for May delivery CLK2 -2.05% sliding $2.02 to $103.39 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

“I don’t think the price of crude is at a rational level right now, there is a very large speculative element,” offered Guard, who believes a more logical price would involve a haircut of as much as 20% from current levels.

On Thursday, President Barack Obama called on Congress to end a number of tax breaks to oil companies, ahead of scheduled vote in the Senate later in the day. The Democratic-sponsored bill would rescind roughly $24 billion in tax breaks over 10 years to companies including Exxon Mobil Corp. XOM -0.11% and Chevron Corp. CVX -0.28% . However, the measure was not expected to pass, with virtually every Republican in the Senate expected to vote against it.
