[19:59 GMT January 24] Cable shot higher as midday approached in New York, garnering significant speculative interest as it pushed back above its 200-day moving average at 1.7878. Many missed the move early Monday when EUR/USD broke its 200-day average and did not want to miss a big move in cable. Prices retested the October top at 1.7900 as dealers targeted rumored large stops at 1.7905. Unable to reach them, a purge was seen at mid-afternoon as many weak specs headed for the exits, fearful of dovish MPC minutes tomorrow or a disappointing Q4 GDP report from the UK. A drop to 1.7533 was seen. Helping boost the USD this afternoon was a consolatory statement from Russia andIran saying that the IAEA was the best mechanism for working out its nuclear issues with the US and EU-3. With the IAEA taking a go-slow approach to what many in the west view as a crisis, this is not much of a concession on Iran"s part and harkens back to the run up to the war in Iraq. Look for range-trade overnight until the MPC minutes and GDP (expected +0.5% Q/Q and +1.6% Y/Y) are released. [email protected]/rs
